Frederic V. Malek was Founder and Chairman of Thayer Lodging Group Inc., which was sold to Brookfield Asset Management in May of 2014. He now serves as Chairman, Thayer Lodging Group, a Brookfield Company.  Thayer Lodging, Brookfield Hotel Properties is a private equity firm that has acquired over $2.7 billion of hotel assets and has consistently earned top returns for investors. Thayer acquired the largest independent hotel management company in the world, Interstate Hotels, and in addition to its U.S. interests, IHR has interests in 10 different countries. Malek is also the Founder and Former Chairman of Thayer Capital Partners, a Washington D.C. based corporate buyout firm that has been merged into a new entity.

In his earlier investment activities Malek led the acquisition of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company with Marriott International as a major equity partner, was one of three leaders in the acquisition of Northwest Airlines, led the acquisition of CB Richard Ellis and was a partner with former President George W. Bush in owning the Texas Rangers Baseball Club. Previously in his business career, Malek was President and CEO of Marriott Hotels, President and CEO of Northwest Airlines, and Co-Chairman of CB Richard Ellis. During his eight year tenure as president of Marriott Hotels, profits quintupled and the stock price increased eight fold.

In addition to his business career, Malek has served as an advisor to four U.S. Presidents (Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and H.W. Bush). More recently, Malek served as National Finance Chairman for the 2008 McCain Presidential Campaign and on Governor Mitt Romney’s National Finance Committee in 2012.

Malek has been an active philanthropist serving on multiple charity boards and contributing to the building of the Malek Tennis Center at West Point; the O’Meara, Malek, Dawkins Class of 1959 Strength and Development Center at West Point; the Resnick-Malek Health Center in Aspen; and the Marlene and Fred Malek School of Health Professions at Marymount University.

Malek has received a number of awards in his career including the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship, the Harvard Business School’s Business Statesman Award, the American Friends of the Czech Republic’s Civil Society Vision Award, and the Churchill Centre Leadership Award.  He was elected to the Washington Business Hall of Fame and inducted into the Horatio Alger Society. He has appeared frequently on television news shows including Fox News, Meet the Press, Fox Sunday, Face the Nation, and on CNBC’s Squawk Box as a guest host.

Additionally, Malek was an Army airborne ranger serving with a special forces (Green Beret) team in Vietnam. He resides with his wife in McLean, Virginia, and is the proud parent of two children and grandfather of five. Besides family, his passions include biking, hiking, and cross country skiing.
