Senator Kerrey served as President of the New School from 2001 to 2010. He more than doubled the university’s endowment and also secured substantial federal funding. He led the New School to major academic growth and expansion including numerous new academic programs and several joint degree programs. Enrollment increased 44%, online course enrollment doubled, and full-time, tenure track faculty was increased.

Senator Kerrey served on National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, commonly known as the 9/11 Commission. The bi-partisan commission of five Democrats and five Republicans issued its final report in July of 2004.

Senator Kerrey served as Democratic Senator from Nebraska from 1989 to 2001, acquiring a reputation as someone willing to take a stand on issues, even in the face of public opposition. He was a member of the Agriculture Committee, the Finance Committee and the Appropriations Committee. He served as vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee from 1995 to 1999. He was chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for the 104th Congress.

Prior to coming to the Senate, he served as Governor of the State of Nebraska from 1983 to 1987. In 1982, despite having no political experience, he defeated an incumbent Republican governor in heavily Republican Nebraska. Governor Kerrey inherited a three percent deficit and was faced with severe federal cutbacks during the greatest economic depression since the 1930’s. By making tough budget cuts, he brought the deficit under control and actually balanced Nebraska’s budget in each of his four years, ultimately turning the deficit he inherited into a seven percent surplus. Governor Kerrey’s programs on welfare reform, education, job training, and the environment became models for the nation.

Senator Kerrey is a former member of the elite Navy SEAL Team and is a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Senator Kerrey attended Lincoln Public Schools and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He is a self-made businessman who, upon returning from the war and starting from scratch in 1972, built a chain of highly successful restaurants and health clubs that employ people across four states. He is married to Sarah Paley and has three children, Henry, Ben and Lindsey.
